Image cropper: crop, rotate and flip

Choose a photo, drag the box to frame what you want, and save the result as PNG, JPEG or WebP. You can also turn the picture, flip it, and level a crooked horizon by up to 45 degrees. The exact size in pixels is shown before you save. The picture is opened in this page and never uploaded.

Drop a picture here

JPEG, PNG or WebP, up to 50 MB and 12000 pixels on the longest side. It is opened in this page and never uploaded.

Choose a picture to start. The crop box, rotation and flip controls appear here.

The saved file is drawn fresh from the pixels you see, so it carries no EXIF data: no location, camera or date, and no colour profile from the original. If the original was turned by its orientation tag, that turn is already applied to the pixels. JPEG and WebP are compressed again, which loses a little quality each time; PNG does not. Everything happens in this page and nothing is uploaded.

How it works

  • •Open a JPEG, PNG or WebP file (up to 50 MB and 12000 pixels on the longest side). Photos that your phone stored sideways are shown the right way up, because your browser applies the orientation tag when it opens the file.
  • •Drag the crop box to move it and drag a corner or an edge to resize it. On a keyboard, focus the box and use the arrow keys to move it (Shift for bigger steps) or Alt plus an arrow to resize it. The Left, Top, Width and Height fields take exact pixel values.
  • •Pick a shape to lock the ratio (1:1, 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, 9:16 or your own). Free lets you drag each edge on its own. The box is kept to whole pixels, so a locked ratio can be off by less than a pixel.
  • •Rotate in 90 degree steps with the two buttons, flip left-right or top-bottom, and use the straighten slider or the angle field for tilts of up to 45 degrees in steps of 0.1. Turning a picture by a few degrees leaves empty triangles in the corners, so the crop is set to the largest box that stays inside the picture. For example, a 4000 × 3000 photo straightened by 2.0 degrees gives a 3900 × 2864 pixel crop with no empty corners (worked out by this page's own formula, which we compared with an independent brute-force search).
  • •Straightening and turning are done on the pixels in your browser, not with a metadata tag. The saved file is a new picture: it has no EXIF data (no location, camera or date) and no colour profile from the original. JPEG and WebP are compressed again each time you save, PNG is not.

Questions

Is my picture uploaded?
No. The picture is opened and cropped in your browser, nothing is sent to a server, and the page does not store it. Refreshing the page clears it.
Does the saved picture keep its location and camera information?
No. The file is drawn again from the pixels you see, so EXIF data such as GPS location, camera model and date is not copied, and neither is the original colour profile. If the original was only marked as rotated by its orientation tag, the rotation is already applied to the pixels, so it looks the same everywhere.
Why is the crop smaller after I straighten a photo?
Turning a rectangle by a few degrees leaves empty triangles in its corners. To avoid them the crop is set to the largest box that fits inside the turned picture, which is a bit smaller than the original. You can drag the box out again; any part outside the picture becomes transparent (PNG, WebP) or the background colour you choose (JPEG), and the page tells you when that happens.
Why does my picture come out a few pixels off the ratio I chose?
Sizes are whole pixels, so a ratio like 16:9 can only be matched exactly when the width is a multiple of 16. Otherwise the height is rounded to the nearest pixel, a difference of at most half a pixel in height.
Why was my file refused?
Only JPEG, PNG and WebP files up to 50 MB, 12000 pixels on the longest side and 100 million pixels in total are opened, because bigger pictures can crash a browser tab, especially on phones. HEIC and GIF are not supported. The cropped result can be at most 16384 pixels on a side.
