Take a photo at home, send it to a stranger — a marketplace buyer, a new landlord, someone from a dating app — and there's a good chance you just sent them your home address. Every photo your iPhone takes embeds GPS coordinates in its EXIF metadata, typically accurate to within a few meters. Whether those coordinates travel with the photo depends entirely on how you share it, and the rules are wildly inconsistent: the same photo is safe on Instagram, dangerous over email, and either one on WhatsApp depending on which button you tap.
Here's the actual behavior, app by app, and three reliable ways to strip location before it leaves your phone.
First: see what your photos are carrying
Open any photo in the Photos app and swipe up (or tap the info button). If location was on when you shot it, you'll see a map with a pin — that's the embedded GPS data, and it's part of the image file itself, not just something Photos displays. Beyond location, EXIF also records the capture timestamp, device model, and camera settings.

Which sharing methods leak your location
This table is the part worth remembering. "Preserves" means the recipient gets your GPS coordinates.

Two traps stand out. The first is the "send as document / send as file" option in messengers: people use it to avoid compression and keep quality, not realizing it also keeps the GPS coordinates that photo-mode sending would have removed. The second is assuming Apple's own channels are safe — iMessage and AirDrop are exactly the ones that pass your location through untouched, because they're designed to deliver the original file faithfully.
And note what "Instagram strips metadata" really means: viewers can't extract your location from the published copy, but you still uploaded the original — coordinates, timestamp and all — to the platform itself.
Three ways to remove location before sharing
1. The share-sheet toggle (built in, per share)
When sharing from Photos: select the photo(s), tap the Share button, then tap Options at the top of the share sheet, turn Location off, and tap Done. This strips GPS from the copy being shared through whatever method you pick next — including AirDrop and Mail.
It works, with two caveats. You have to remember it every single time — the toggle isn't sticky in the way most people expect, and one forgotten share undoes all your discipline. And it only removes location, not the rest of the metadata (timestamp, device model, camera settings), which can still identify when and with what you shot the photo.
2. Adjust or remove location in Photos (per photo)
Open the photo, tap the More (···) button, choose Adjust Location, then No Location. This edits the photo in your library rather than just the shared copy. Useful when you know a specific photo will be shared repeatedly — a rental listing, a profile picture. Same limitation as above: GPS only, and it's tedious beyond a handful of photos.
3. Strip everything with a dedicated tool (per batch, all metadata)
For photos going to strangers or the open internet, the robust move is removing all metadata, not just GPS. A sane default policy
You don't need to treat every photo as radioactive. A reasonable setup:
Photos to people you trust, through any channel: leave them alone — location data in your own library is useful (it powers the map view and search in Photos). Photos to strangers, marketplaces, listings, forums, or any messenger's "as file" mode: strip everything first, then share the cleaned copy. And for photos taken somewhere you never want recorded at all, turn off Camera's location access before shooting: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera → Never. No coordinates captured means nothing to remove later.
The uncomfortable part of photo privacy in 2026 is that the leak paths are the personal ones — the email to a landlord, the AirDrop to an acquaintance, the "high quality" document send. The platforms everyone worries about mostly clean public copies already. It's the one-to-one shares, the ones that feel private, that deliver your coordinates intact.
