Search result (SERP) preview

Type a title, description and address to see a Google-style search result on desktop and on a phone, and where each part would be cut off. Google truncates by pixel width, not characters, so the tool measures width the way Google lays it out.

Title: about 562 px of 580 px (58 characters)

Description: about 1091 px of 920 px (175 characters)

Checks

  • CheckThe description is longer than Google usually shows; the end will be cut.

Pixel widths are estimates from Arial letter widths. Google sometimes rewrites titles and descriptions, so treat this as a guide, not a promise.

How it works

  • •Enter your title, description and page address. The preview updates as you type.
  • •Watch the bars: green fits, amber is close to the edge, red will be cut. The “where it gets cut” lines show exactly which words survive.
  • •Switch between desktop, mobile or both, adjust the wording until nothing important is cut, then copy it into your page. The meta tag generator writes the final tags.

What it does and what it cannot do

  • •Limits are estimates (about 580 px for desktop titles, 920 px desktop and 680 px mobile for descriptions). Google changes its layout without notice.
  • •Google rewrites titles and descriptions often, particularly when they do not match the search or the page. The preview shows what you supplied.
  • •Rich results (stars, prices, sitelinks, dates) are not simulated; only the plain blue-link result.
  • •Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters are about as wide as the letter M, so they cut at roughly 29 characters in a desktop title.

Questions

Why does Google cut by pixels instead of characters?
Because letters have different widths. A title of fifty narrow letters fits where fifty wide ones would not. Google gives a title about 600 pixels of room and ends it with an ellipsis when it runs out.
What is the best title length?
Aim for roughly 50 to 60 characters, and always check the pixel bar. Put the most important words first so that if a cut happens, the useful part survives.
What is the best description length?
Between 70 and 155 characters. Longer descriptions are cut, shorter ones may be replaced by Google with text from the page.
Is this the same as what Google really shows?
It is a close model, not a copy. Fonts, device, language and Google's experiments cause small differences, so leave a little safety margin.
Does the preview work for my language?
Yes. Latin letters use real Arial widths and CJK characters are measured as full-width. Accented letters are approximated.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The measurement is done in this page and nothing leaves your browser.
