Meta tag generator

Fill in your page title and description and get the exact <head> tags to paste, with a live preview of the Google result and of the card people see when your link is shared. Length warnings use pixel width, which is how Google actually cuts text. Everything is built in your browser.

Page basics

Shown as the blue headline in search results and on browser tabs.

Title: about 502 px of 580 px (54 characters)

The grey text under the headline. Google may write its own instead.

Description: about 826 px of 920 px (130 characters)

The one address you want indexed. Must start with https://

A code such as en, en-GB or zh-Hans. Written to the <html> tag.

Search engines

Open Graph (Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack…)

Leave blank to reuse the page title and description.

Absolute https:// address. 1200 x 630 px works everywhere.

X / Twitter card

X falls back to the Open Graph tags when its own are missing, but listing both is safest.

Paste the tags between <head> and </head>. The opening <html> tag goes at the top of the page.

How it works

  • •Type the title and description. The bars under each box show the estimated pixel width against Google's limit, and the preview shows where the text would be cut.
  • •Add the canonical address, language, robots choices and, if you want good link cards, the Open Graph and Twitter fields. Blank social fields reuse your title and description.
  • •Copy the tags into the <head> of your page and put the <html> line at the top. The checks list tells you about relative image addresses, a missing canonical, accidental noindex and more.

What it does and what it cannot do

  • •Google sometimes ignores your title or description and writes its own from the page, so a preview is a good guess, not a promise.
  • •Widths are estimated from Arial letter widths; real results vary a little by device, language and Google's current layout.
  • •Social platforms cache link cards. After you change tags, use each platform's debugger or wait for the cache to refresh before judging the result.
  • •The image preview loads the address you type, from your browser. Some sites block that; if so, the card still works on the real platforms as long as the address is public.
  • •This tool writes tags. It does not publish them or check the live page.

Questions

How long should a title tag be?
Google cuts titles by pixel width, around 580 to 600 pixels on desktop, which is usually 50 to 60 characters. Wide letters like W and M use more space and narrow ones like i and l use less, so count pixels, not characters. This tool shows both.
How long should a meta description be?
About 70 to 155 characters is a safe range. Google shows roughly 920 pixels on desktop and about 680 on mobile before cutting with an ellipsis. A description does not directly raise rankings, but a clear one improves clicks.
What is the canonical tag for?
It tells search engines which address is the main version when the same page is reachable under several (with tracking parameters, with and without www, and so on). It must be a full URL starting with https://.
Do I need both Open Graph and Twitter tags?
Open Graph is read by Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack, Discord and most others. X falls back to Open Graph when its own tags are missing, but adding twitter:card lets you pick the large image layout. Writing both is the safest.
What size should the share image be?
1200 by 630 pixels (about 1.9 to 1) works on nearly every platform. Use a full https:// address; relative paths are ignored by most platforms.
Will noindex remove my page from Google?
Yes, over time. noindex asks search engines to drop the page from results. Use it for pages like thank-you screens and internal search, and check it is off for pages you want found. The tool warns when it is on.
