App Store keyword and metadata checker
Paste your listing text and see at once which fields are over Apple's limits, which keywords repeat words from your name or from each other, and which words, such as "Free" or "Android", tend to get a submission rejected. It runs in this page; nothing is uploaded.
Your listing text
Paste the text exactly as it will go into App Store Connect. Nothing is uploaded or saved; it stays in this page until you close it.

How it works
- •Limits: name 30, subtitle 30, keywords 100, promotional text 170, description 4,000 and What's New 4,000 characters. Characters are counted as Unicode code points, so an emoji or a Chinese character counts as one.
- •Keywords are split at commas. Each term is broken into words (lower case, split at anything that is not a letter or number, one-letter words ignored). A word that is already in the app name or subtitle is marked, because those are already searchable. A word that an earlier term already used is marked too; a repeat inside one term, as in "peer to peer", is left alone.
- •Chinese, Japanese and Korean text without spaces is compared as whole words only, so "修图" is not marked as part of "修图大师". This errs on the side of not marking something that might be useful.
- •Price words are found with the same list we check by hand before every release of our own apps: currency signs before a number, amounts with USD, RMB, EUR, GBP or CNY, "% off", "price drop", "on sale", "discounted", the Chinese words 免费, 折扣, 特价, 优惠, 促销 and 降价, and the word "free" on its own. "Ad-free", "gluten-free", "free-form" and "free storage" are not flagged.
- •Android, Google Play, Play Store and Windows Phone are flagged in every field, following Guideline 2.3.10.
- •The compact version removes spaces around commas and empty terms, so every character goes to a keyword.
What it does not do
- •It cannot tell you how popular a keyword is or where your app ranks for it; it only checks the text you paste.
- •It checks the text you enter, not your live App Store listing.
- •Apple can change field limits and review rules. App Store Connect's own counter and the reviewer have the final word.
- •Passing every check does not guarantee approval: reviewers also look at screenshots, the app itself and things no text check can see.
- •It does not judge whether your keywords are relevant or fall under trademark rules.
Questions
- How long can the App Store keyword field be?
- 100 characters, including commas and any spaces. Separate terms with commas only; App Store Connect does not need a space after each comma.
- Do spaces after commas count toward the 100 characters?
- Yes, a space is a character like any other. "photo, editor" uses one more character than "photo, editor". This page shows how many characters spaces take and gives you a compact copy without them.
- Should I repeat words from my app name or subtitle in the keywords?
- No. The name and subtitle are already searchable, so repeating their words in the keyword field spends characters without adding coverage. The same goes for using one word in two keyword terms. Use the space for different words instead.
- Can I use the word "free" in my app name or subtitle?
- Avoid it. Guideline 2.3.7 does not allow price information in metadata, and one of our apps was rejected twice for the single word "Free" in its subtitle. Words like "ad-free" or "free-form" describe the app rather than its price and are not flagged here.
- Does promotional text need a review?
- No. Apple lets you change promotional text at any time without submitting a new version. It is still part of your metadata, so this page still warns about price words in it.
- Is a Chinese or Japanese character counted as one?
- Yes. This checker counts each Chinese, Japanese or Korean character, and each emoji, as one character, the same way we count them when we prepare our own listings. Check the final text in App Store Connect's own counter before you submit.
