App preview video checker
An App Store app preview must be 15 to 30 seconds long, at most 30 fps and 500 MB, and one of the accepted sizes: 886 × 1920 (or 1920 × 886) for every iPhone with Face ID or Dynamic Island, 1200 × 1600 for most iPads, 1920 × 1080 for Mac and Apple TV. Drop your videos here to see what passes, what fails and the exact fix, before App Store Connect refuses the upload.

Up to 10 files at once: .mov, .mp4 or .m4v. Only the file's index is read, in this page; nothing is uploaded.
Apple's rules: 15–30 s, up to 30 fps, up to 500 MB, H.264 (.mov, .m4v, .mp4) or ProRes 422 HQ (.mov), stereo sound at 44.1 or 48 kHz, up to 3 previews per display size and language.

Rules copied from Apple's App preview specifications page, checked on 2026-10-30. Apple's page
How it works
- •The page reads only the index at the start or end of each .mov, .mp4 or .m4v file (with the open-source mp4box.js library, loaded from this site). The video itself is not decoded and nothing leaves your device, so even a 500 MB file is checked in a moment.
- •Length comes from the file's own duration. Frame rate comes from the most common frame duration in the index, so a 29.97 fps screen recording reads as 29.97 and a 60 fps one as 60. Resolution is the size as played, after any rotation flag.
- •Each measurement is compared with Apple's App preview specifications page, copied into this page's data and dated. Apple gives no tolerances, so the limits are strict: 30.02 seconds is over 30.
- •Bit rates are averages worked out from the file. Apple calls 10–12 Mbps a target for H.264, so a different rate is shown as something to check, not a failure.
- •For anything that fails you get the fix: a link to the trim or compress tool, or an ffmpeg command with the right size, frame rate, profile and sound settings filled in.
What it does and what it cannot do
- •It checks the file, not the content. App Review also has rules about what a preview shows (footage captured from the app itself, for example); this page cannot judge those.
- •It does not change your video. Use the trim and compress tools linked here, or the ffmpeg command it gives you.
- •Apple's specs list H.264 and ProRes 422 HQ. HEVC (H.265), the iPhone camera's default, is not on that list, so it is marked as failing.
- •It cannot see whether an H.264 file is interlaced or whether a ProRes file has external references; Apple asks for progressive video with none. Screen recordings and normal exports are progressive.
- •If a file's index cannot be read (an unusual container), it falls back to what the browser's player reports, length and size only, and marks the rest unknown.
- •Apple can change these rules. The date the rules were last copied is shown under the checker; App Store Connect has the final say.
Questions
- What resolution is an app preview for iPhone 16 Pro Max or iPhone 17 Pro Max?
- 886 × 1920 in portrait or 1920 × 886 in landscape. App Store Connect takes these sizes, not the phone's screen resolution (1320 × 2868), for every iPhone with Face ID or Dynamic Island, including iPhone Air and the smaller Pro models.
- How long can an app preview be?
- At least 15 seconds and at most 30 seconds. Apple gives no rounding allowance, so a video that ends at 30.2 seconds should be trimmed to 30.
- Can an app preview be 60 fps?
- No. Apple's limit is 30 frames per second for both H.264 and ProRes. iPhone screen recordings are often 60 fps, so re-encode them at 30 fps before uploading.
- Why does App Store Connect reject my app preview?
- The usual causes are a size that is not on the accepted list (for example the phone's native 1290 × 2796), a length outside 15–30 seconds, a frame rate above 30, HEVC video, or sound that is mono or at a sample rate other than 44.1 or 48 kHz. This page shows which one applies.
- Does an app preview need sound?
- Apple's page lists sound settings (stereo, 256 kbps AAC, 44.1 or 48 kHz) but does not say a sound track is required. If you include sound, it must be stereo: one 2-channel track or two 1-channel tracks.
- How many app previews can I upload?
- Up to three per display size and language. App previews are optional, and they appear before your screenshots on the product page.
