Tip calculator and bill splitter

Type the bill, choose a tip percentage and the number of people, and see the tip, the total and each person's share at once. You can tip on the amount before or after tax, round the total or each share up to a whole amount, and compare other percentages in a table. Shares are worked out in cents, so they always add up exactly.

If your receipt shows tax separately, enter it here so you can choose whether to tip on it.

How it works

  • •Enter the bill. If your receipt lists tax separately, enter it too and choose whether the tip is based on the amount before tax or on the total with tax.
  • •Tap a common percentage or type your own, up to two decimals. Set how many people are sharing.
  • •Pick a rounding style if you want round numbers: round the total, or each person's share, up or to the nearest whole amount. The tip changes to absorb the rounding and the effective percentage is shown.
  • •When the total does not divide evenly, a few people pay one cent more; the page tells you how many, so the shares add up exactly.

What it does and what it cannot do

  • •The page calculates a plain equal split. It does not split by items ordered, and it adds no service charge or tax on its own: you enter the tax yourself.
  • •Tip customs differ by country and by venue. Many restaurants already add a service charge, so check your receipt before tipping on top.
  • •Amounts are in your own currency; the page does not know which one. Money is limited to two decimals.
  • •Nothing is sent or stored; reloading clears the boxes.

Questions

How do I calculate a 20% tip?
Multiply the bill by 0.20. On 84.60 that is 16.92, so the total is 101.52. A quick mental shortcut: move the decimal point one place to the left for 10%, then double it.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Both are common. Many people tip on the pre-tax amount because tax is not part of the service; others tip on the total for simplicity. Enter the tax and the page shows either one.
How much should I tip?
It depends on where you are. In the United States 15 to 20 percent is usual at a sit-down restaurant. In many European countries 5 to 10 percent or rounding up is normal, and in Japan or mainland China tipping is generally not expected. Venues that add a service charge usually need nothing extra.
How does it split a bill that does not divide evenly?
It works in whole cents. A total of 99.83 for 3 people gives 33.27 for one person and 33.28 for the other two, so nobody is short and the sum is exactly 99.83.
What does rounding do to my tip?
Rounding changes the total to a whole amount, and the difference goes into the tip. Rounding up never lowers the tip. If rounding to the nearest would make the tip negative, the page rounds up instead.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The sums run in your browser and are forgotten when you leave the page.
