Discount calculator

Enter a price and one or more discounts, either a percentage or a fixed amount such as a coupon, and see what you pay, what you save and the real total discount. Discounts are applied one after another, the way shops do it, so 20% off then 10% off is 28% off, not 30%. Two other cards work backwards: the percent off from two prices, and the original price from a sale price.

How it works

  • •On the first card, type the original price and add each discount in the order it is applied. Choose percent or amount for every row. Add sales tax or VAT if you want the total at the till.
  • •The table shows every step: the price before, how much came off, and the price after. Under it you see the effective discount compared with simply adding the percentages, and the final price if the discounts were applied in the opposite order.
  • •Use Percent off when you know the original and sale price and want to know how big the discount is. Use Original price when the tag shows the sale price and the percentage and you want to know what it was before.
  • •Each step is rounded half up to the cent, as a till does. Money accepts a dot or comma as the decimal mark.

What it does and what it cannot do

  • •Shops differ in how they combine offers: some apply a coupon before the percentage, some after, and some do not allow stacking. The page lets you choose the order, but cannot know a particular shop's rules.
  • •Tax rules vary by country and by product, so you enter the rate yourself; none is assumed.
  • •Rounding in a real checkout can differ by a cent if the shop rounds only at the end or per item.
  • •Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Questions

How do I calculate the price after a discount?
Multiply the price by (100 minus the percent) and divide by 100. For 25% off 59.99: 59.99 x 0.75 = 44.99 (the page rounds to the cent). You save 15.00.
Why is 20% off plus 10% off not 30% off?
The second discount is taken from the already reduced price. On 100: 20% off leaves 80, then 10% off 80 is 8, leaving 72. You saved 28 in total, which is 28%. The step table shows it.
Does it matter whether a coupon or a percentage comes first?
Yes, when one is a fixed amount. 15 off then 25% off an 80 item gives 48.75, while 25% off then 15 off gives 45.00. The page shows the result of your order and the opposite one.
How do I find the original price from the sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 minus the discount). A jacket on sale for 75 at 25% off cost 75 / 0.75 = 100 before. Do not add 25% to 75: that would give 93.75.
How do I find the discount percentage between two prices?
Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100. From 120 down to 90 is 30 / 120 = 25% off.
Is my data stored?
No. Everything is worked out in your browser and forgotten when you close the page.
