Webcam, microphone and speaker test
Press Start camera or Start microphone and allow access. You see your picture with the resolution and frame rate the camera really delivers, a live level meter that tells you in words whether your microphone is too quiet, fine or too loud, and you can record 5 seconds and play it back. Left and right test tones check your speakers or headphones. Nothing is recorded to a server or saved, and the camera and microphone switch off when you stop or leave the page.
…
How to use it
- •Camera: choose a camera and, if you like, a resolution to ask for, then press Start camera. The list shows the size and frame rate the camera actually delivers, which can be lower than what you asked for.
- •Microphone: press Start microphone and speak. “No sound detected”, “Level too low”, “Level OK” and “Clipping” are based on the loudest sound of the last few seconds. Then press Record 5 seconds and play back to hear yourself.
- •Speakers: turn the volume down, then play the tone on the left, the right or both. You should hear it only on the chosen side.
- •“What the browser sees” lists every camera, microphone and speaker the browser can find, and whether this site is allowed to use them.
If something does not work
- •Access blocked: allow Camera and Microphone for this site in the browser (the icon at the left of the address bar in Chrome, Safari Settings > Websites, the address bar icon in Firefox), then reload. The page lists the steps for each browser.
- •On a Mac, if no browser sees the device, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera or Microphone and switch your browser on, then restart it.
- •“In use by another app” means a video call, recorder or another tab holds the device. Close it and try again.
- •Device names stay hidden until you have allowed access once, and Safari and Firefox do not list speakers at all. That is the browser, not a fault.
Questions
- Is my camera or microphone recorded or uploaded?
- No. The picture and sound stay in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server. The 5-second recording lives only in this page, plays back to you, and is deleted when you leave or record again.
- Why does the camera report a lower resolution than I asked for?
- The browser treats your choice as a wish. The camera gives what it can, and it may be less in low light, on a slow USB port or when another app is using the camera. The page shows what was really delivered.
- What do the microphone verdicts mean?
- “No sound detected” means the loudest sound in the last few seconds was close to silence. “Level too low” means it was very quiet. “Level OK” is a healthy level, and “Clipping” means it hit the top of the scale and will sound distorted.
- Why does my microphone sound different here than in a call?
- This test turns off echo cancellation, noise suppression and volume levelling, so you see the raw signal. Call apps usually turn them on.
- Why can I not see my device names?
- Browsers hide device names until you allow camera or microphone access. Allow it once with Start camera or Start microphone, then press Refresh list.
- Does the speaker test work on a phone?
- Yes, on most phones. Some phones play the tone from one speaker only, so left and right may sound the same without headphones.
