Subtractive notation, the clock-face exception, and numbers above 3,999
Standard Roman numerals use seven symbols — I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), M (1000) — combined additively (VI = 5+1 = 6) or subtractively when a smaller symbol precedes a larger one (IV = 5−1 = 4, IX = 10−1 = 9). The accepted subtractive pairs are limited: I can only precede V or X, X can only precede L or C, and C can only precede D or M — you won't see a "correct" IL for 49, for instance; it's XLIX. Modern convention also caps repetition of any symbol at three in a row (III is fine, IIII generally isn't, in formal usage).
One well-known exception: clock faces very often show IIII for 4 instead of IV, even though it breaks the subtractive rule everywhere else on the same dial. Clockmakers have offered several explanations over the centuries — visual balance against VIII directly opposite, easier legibility at a glance, or simply an older convention that predates the standardized subtractive rules taught today — but no single account is definitively confirmed as the reason; it's genuinely uncertain which motivation (if any one alone) is correct.
Standard notation tops out at 3,999 (MMMCMXCIX) because M can't repeat more than three times without an extension.
