Remove the sound from a video
Choose an MP4 or MOV and download the same video without its sound track. The picture is copied byte for byte, not re-encoded, so there is no quality loss and even a long video is done in seconds. Nothing leaves your device.
Drop a video here
MP4, MOV or M4V up to 1 GB. Nothing is uploaded.
How it works
- •Choose or drop a video. The page checks that it has sound to remove.
- •Press Remove sound. The page copies every compressed picture frame into a new MP4 and leaves the sound track out.
- •Download the new MP4. The original file is not changed.
- •If the picture is in a format that cannot be copied into MP4 this way, the page re-encodes it as H.264 instead and tells you.
- •The file is read with mp4box.js and written with mp4-muxer, two open-source libraries served from this site (licences: /tools/vendor/NOTICE-media.txt). Decoding and encoding use your browser's own WebCodecs; nothing is sent anywhere.
What it does and what it cannot do
- •Reads MP4, MOV and M4V up to 1 GB with H.264 video (HEVC from phones only where your browser can decode it). WebM, MKV and AVI are not supported.
- •Copying the picture works in any modern browser, even without WebCodecs. Only the rare fallback (re-encoding) needs a browser with WebCodecs and an H.264 encoder.
- •All sound tracks are removed; choosing one of several tracks is not possible. Subtitle and chapter tracks are not copied either.
- •The output is an MP4 even when the input was a MOV. Date, location and other metadata are not copied.
- •The whole result is built in memory, so very large files (close to 1 GB) need a computer with plenty of free memory.
Questions
- Is my video uploaded?
- No. Your browser does it all and saves the result; nothing is sent anywhere.
- Is there any quality loss?
- No. The picture data is copied as it is, frame by frame, and only the sound track is left out. The page tells you if it ever has to re-encode instead.
- Why is it so fast?
- Nothing is decoded or encoded: the page only rewrites the MP4 container around the same compressed frames.
- Can I keep the sound and remove the picture instead?
- Not on this page. For an MP4, the audio converter can save its sound as a separate MP3 or WAV file.
- Does it work on a phone?
- Yes, in a recent mobile browser. Very large files may run out of memory on a phone.
- Can I remove the sound from part of the video only?
- No. The whole sound track is removed.
