About this app

The developer's US App Store description, in full.

Report late, and the enemy has already moved. Recon Notebook puts you in the role of a scout. Take a brief look at the battlefield, then report what you saw on a top-down grid map. Reports follow the classic SALUTE spot-report format: Size, Activity, Location, Unit, Time, and Equipment, in that order. ■ Ten Seconds of Observation Drag to move your binocular view and pinch to zoom. While your remaining observation time ticks down and the detection gauge fills, count the tanks, trucks, infantry, and guns, and read the flags and vehicle insignia. When the gauge is full, you must withdraw on the spot. ■ A Map Filled In From Memory When the observation ends, place enemy blocks on the grid map to file your report. Call each count as exact (×1.5), about ±20% (×1.0), or wide ±50% (×0.5). The narrower the call, the bigger the payoff when you're right, and a miss scores zero for that item. Also report the enemy's activity (assembling, moving, entrenched, ambushing, or withdrawing), their direction of movement, and unit insignia. The radio clock keeps running, and if your report is late, a moving enemy is judged one square further along. How well you remember what you saw decides the mission, in a game of observation and memory. ■ 40 Missions and Daily Recon The campaign has 8 chapters with 5 missions each, 40 in all. From counting in Chapter 1, through position, movement, unit identification, camouflage, decoys, and night and deception, to strategic recon in Chapter 8, every chapter adds a new rule. Expect enemies hidden under forest cover and camouflage nets, rubber balloon tanks you can only expose by their shadows, track marks, and sway, intercepted radio that may be wrong, and reports from a neighboring scout. In the final chapter you read tank serial numbers to estimate the enemy's total production. Daily Recon opens a new battlefield every day. Everyone gets the same battlefield on the same date, and your best accuracy that day is kept on record. ■ Debriefs, Credits, and 19 Pieces of Gear Once you send your report, you get a verdict and a debrief. Your report is laid side by side with the truth, pointing out what you missed and where you were fooled, and your result earns medals and credits. There are 19 pieces of gear in all. Apart from the notebook pins you start with, you buy the rangefinder, counter, camo suit, camera, high-power radio, Binoculars Mk2, Binoculars Mk3, recon manual, night vision goggles, thermal imager, codebook, ghillie suit, recon periscope, rebreather, noise-dampening boots, observation tripod, silent shutter, and recon drone with credits. The thermal imager picks up the heat of hidden enemies but not cold balloon decoys, the codebook tells you whether intercepted radio is deception, and the drone gives you a 12-second aerial view. As medals pile up you rise from Private to Captain, and at Sergeant your loadout grows from 3 slots to 4. ■ Before You Start · A single-player game.
