Hands-free row counting for crochet and knitting

Accurate stitch counting is one of those unglamorous fundamentals that determines whether a crochet project turns out right. Miscount by one or two stitches in a granny square and the edges stop lining up; miscount in amigurumi and a shape subtly distorts; miscount in lace or colorwork and the pattern can visibly shift out of alignment rows later, long after the mistake happened and far enough back that frogging (unraveling) back to fix it is painful.

The traditional tools are simple — a physical clicker counter, tally marks on paper, or stitch markers placed at intervals — and they all share the same weakness: they require you to stop, look away from your work, and manually register the count. That's a real interruption when you're in a rhythm, and it's exactly the moment a miscount tends to happen.

We built LoopTally around one idea: counting shouldn't require looking at anything. Using the iPhone's physical volume buttons lets you register a stitch by feel, without breaking your grip on the yarn or looking away from the piece, which is the actual bottleneck a stitch counter app is supposed to solve.

Why do crocheters need a stitch or row counter at all?

Many patterns depend on exact stitch and row counts to come out the right shape and size — amigurumi, garment shaping, lace, and colorwork are all sensitive to miscounts. A counter removes the mental overhead of keeping track manually while also working the yarn, which is where miscounts tend to creep in.

What's the difference between counting stitches and counting rows?

Stitch counting tracks your position within the current row (useful for hitting an exact stitch target, like a repeat pattern), while row counting tracks how many rows or rounds you've completed overall. Patterns often specify both — a stitch count per row and a total row count — so a counter that links the two and auto-advances rows saves a manual reset every time.

How do hands-free volume-button counters actually work?

The app listens for the phone's physical volume-up/down button presses as input instead of requiring a screen tap, which means you can register a count by feel through a pocket, a stand, or without looking away from the yarn at all — the same mechanism apps use for remote camera shutter control, repurposed for counting.

Can a stitch counter help prevent frogging (unraveling mistakes)?

Indirectly, yes — most frogging happens because a miscount several rows back only becomes visible much later, once the pattern is visibly off. Catching the count accurately in real time, rather than relying on memory or an easily-lost tally mark, reduces how often that delayed discovery happens.
