QR code generator
Type a link or some text, or fill in your Wi-Fi details, and the code appears as you type. Download it as a sharp SVG for print or a PNG for anywhere else. No sign-up, no tracking link in between, and the code never stops working.
What goes in the code
Look and size
Higher levels survive scratches and smudges but make a denser code. M suits screens and most print.
Preview
Version 2 (25 × 25 squares), byte (UTF-8) mode, level M, mask 3. Uses 77% of the space at this size.
PNG size: 330 × 330 px
Contrast 21.0:1 is fine for scanning.
Always test a printed code with a couple of phones before you print hundreds. The contrast warning is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee.
How it works
- •The code is built by this page itself. What you type is not sent to a server, so you can switch off your connection and it still works.
- •The text goes straight into the code. There is no redirect link in the middle, so the code keeps working as long as the link or text in it does.
- •It picks the most compact mode for you: digits only, upper-case letters and digits, or full text (UTF-8, so Chinese and emoji work), then the smallest size that fits.
- •Error correction adds spare data so a scratched or smudged code still reads. A higher level means a denser code for the same text.
- •The Wi-Fi option writes the standard WIFI: text that phone cameras recognise, with special characters in the name or password escaped for you.
Questions
- Do these QR codes expire?
- No. The link or text is stored in the pattern itself, with no short link or account behind it, so there is nothing that can expire. If the website it points to goes away, the code will still open the old address.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. The code is made by your browser and downloads are created on your device. You can turn off your network before typing to check.
- SVG or PNG?
- SVG is vector: it stays sharp at any size, so it is the better choice for print and design tools. PNG is a normal picture that works in chats, slides and documents; set the pixels per square to make it bigger.
- Why will my code not scan?
- The usual causes are too little contrast, a light code on a dark background, a border thinner than 4 squares, or printing it too small for the amount of text. Shorter text gives larger squares at the same print size. Test with a couple of phones before printing many.
