How to verify an iPhone photo backup to a NAS

An upload is not proof of a usable backup. Verify dates, originals, duplicates, and a real restore from your iPhone to a NAS.

An iPhone photo backup is only useful if you can find the originals later. An upload progress bar proves that a transfer ran. It does not prove that every month is present, that Live Photos kept both files, or that the destination can restore the image when you need it.

The reliable workflow is: copy, compare, inspect, and restore-test. Do that before deleting anything from the phone or downgrading an iCloud storage plan.

1. Decide what a complete backup means

Write down the scope before checking the result. "My photos" can mean different things:

  • Every photo and video in the iPhone Photos library.
  • Only the originals currently downloaded from iCloud Photos.
  • A selected album or date range.
  • Photos plus Live Photos, where the still image and motion component both matter.
  • Edited versions, original versions, or both.

If you do not define the scope, a smaller destination can look complete simply because it copied a smaller selection.

2. Compare the timeline, not just the total count

Counts are useful, but a matching count can still hide a missing month and an accidental duplicate. Browse the destination by capture date and check the oldest and newest items. Then inspect several busy periods: holidays, birthdays, and the months when you recorded a lot of video.

Look for:

  • Gaps in the year or month folders.
  • Videos missing from otherwise complete photo periods.
  • Live Photos represented by only a still image.
  • Screenshots or imported images that were not included by the selected filter.
  • A sudden duplicate set caused by running a second import into a new folder.

If the NAS uses a date-based folder structure, this check is fast. If it is one huge folder, create a temporary report or sort by the camera capture date rather than the file modification date.

3. Check originals and metadata

Open representative files on the NAS, not only thumbnails. Pick a recent HEIC, an older JPEG, a long video, and a Live Photo. Confirm that the resolution and duration are what you expect.

Do not use the upload timestamp as the photo date. A file copied today can have a capture date from ten years ago. Photo managers and folder tools may sort the result incorrectly if metadata was stripped or rewritten during export.

If location privacy matters, decide whether GPS metadata should be preserved in your archive. Keeping the original for private storage and making a stripped sharing copy are two different workflows.

4. Check for duplicates before deleting anything

Duplicates are not always identical files. The same photo may exist as an original, an edited export, a resized message attachment, and a second copy with a different filename.

Use a checksum-aware workflow when possible. A checksum can tell you whether two files are byte-for-byte identical; it cannot tell you whether two different encodings show the same picture. For that reason, checksum deduplication and visual review solve different problems.

Keep the source phone and the NAS copy available until the duplicate policy is clear. A cleanup pass should never be the first backup verification step.

5. Restore one real file

The most valuable test is a restore. Pick a photo, a video, and a Live Photo from the NAS and bring them back to the iPhone or a separate test folder. Open them. Check the image, motion, audio, and capture date.

Also test a file that is not recent. Many backup mistakes appear only when you reach for an old item that was online-only, stored in a different album, or transferred before the current configuration was enabled.

6. Verify encryption and credentials separately

If you enable end-to-end encryption, test the recovery key before treating the archive as complete. A backup that cannot be decrypted is not a usable backup. Store the recovery key separately from the phone and NAS; do not rely on the only device that created it.

The storage password and the encryption key are different things. A working WebDAV or S3 login does not prove that an encrypted file can be restored. Test both paths.

7. Keep a recurring check

Photo libraries change continuously. Add a small monthly routine:

1. Confirm the latest month has arrived. 2. Restore one recent file. 3. Restore one older file. 4. Check the free space on the destination. 5. Confirm that the backup app still has permission to access the destination.

Do this before a trip, a phone upgrade, or a large cleanup. A ten-minute restore test is cheaper than discovering a broken backup after the phone is lost.

Backup versus sync

Sync is designed to make two places look alike. Backup is designed to preserve a recoverable history. If a bad deletion propagates through a sync relationship, both copies can disappear. Keep an independent archive or versioned destination when the photos matter.

The NAS should not be the only copy. A practical approach is to keep the phone or primary library, the NAS, and one additional copy stored elsewhere or offline. The exact setup depends on your budget and risk, but the principle is simple: one device failure should not remove every copy.
