# ITMS-90725 SDK version issue: which Xcode you need to upload > ITMS-90725: the build used an SDK older than App Store Connect accepts. Since April 28, 2026 that means Xcode 26 and the iOS 26 SDK or later. - Canonical page: https://obelisk.club/blog/itms-90725-sdk-version-issue - Author: Peter Zhang - Published: 2026-11-01 - Tags: xcode, app-store-connect, itms, sdk, debugging To fix ITMS-90725, archive the app again with an Xcode release that includes the SDK App Store Connect currently requires, and upload the new build. Since April 28, 2026, Apple's [Upcoming Requirements](https://developer.apple.com/news/upcoming-requirements/) page says: "Apps uploaded to App Store Connect must be built with Xcode 26 or later using an SDK for iOS 26, iPadOS 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26, or watchOS 26." Your code does not need to change for this error; the build tools do. ## The exact error The message names the SDK your build used and the minimum Apple accepts. This version was posted in the Apple Developer Forums [thread on ITMS-90725](https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/726841) in March 2023: ```text ITMS-90725: SDK Version Issue - This app was built with the iOS 15.5 SDK. Starting April 2023, all iOS apps submitted to the App Store must be built with the iOS 16.1 SDK or later, included in Xcode 14.1 or later. ``` In that thread, an App Store Connect Engineer at Apple explained that an earlier version of the message named the wrong requirement and that it had been corrected to the text above. The SDK and Xcode numbers in the message follow whatever rule is current, so yours will name newer versions. Apple does not publish a list of ITMS codes. ## Why it happens Each SDK ships inside a specific Xcode release, and Apple raises the minimum SDK for uploads on a published date. The rules from the Upcoming Requirements page (the 2025 row is from an [archived copy of the page](https://web.archive.org/web/20250315000000/https://developer.apple.com/news/upcoming-requirements/), because the live page no longer lists it): | Since | Requirement as Apple states it | | --- | --- | | April 25, 2023 | iOS and iPadOS apps: Xcode 14.1 and the iOS 16.1 SDK or later; watchOS apps: Xcode 14.1 and the watchOS 9.1 SDK or later | | April 29, 2024 | Xcode 15 for iOS 17, iPadOS 17, tvOS 17, or watchOS 10 | | April 24, 2025 | Xcode 16 or later using an SDK for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, tvOS 18, visionOS 2, or watchOS 11 | | April 28, 2026 | Xcode 26 or later using an SDK for iOS 26, iPadOS 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26, or watchOS 26 | | April 2027 (announced) | iOS and iPadOS apps built with the iOS 27 & iPadOS 27 SDK or later; tvOS, visionOS and watchOS apps with their 27 SDKs or later | The April 2027 rule comes from Apple's September 9, 2026 news post, [App Store submissions now open for the latest OS releases](https://developer.apple.com/news/?id=k1mtkt1k). So a build that uploaded fine one spring can be refused the next, with no change to your project. The usual causes are an old Xcode left selected on the Mac, or a CI machine or cloud build image still on an older Xcode. The current rule names iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, visionOS and watchOS; it does not name macOS. ## How to fix it 1. **Install a current Xcode.** Xcode 26 or later meets the April 2026 rule. Apple's [Xcode support page](https://developer.apple.com/support/xcode/) lists the Mac each release needs: Xcode 26 needs macOS Sequoia 15.6 or later. The [Swift and Xcode versions table](/tools/swift-xcode-versions) shows which Swift version each Xcode release ships with. 2. **Make sure that Xcode is the one in use.** On the command line, `xcode-select -p` prints the selected developer folder; switch it with `sudo xcode-select -s /Applications/Xcode.app` if it points at an old copy. On CI, set the Xcode version in the workflow, not only on your own Mac. 3. **Archive again and upload with a new build number.** 4. **Check the next upload rule too.** Moving to a newer SDK can bring new checks. For example, apps built with the iOS 27 SDK or later must have a launch screen key, or the upload fails with [ITMS-90870](/blog/itms-90870-missing-launch-screen). Building with a new SDK does not force you to drop older iOS versions. Apple's support page lists Xcode 26 as able to deploy to iOS 15 through 26. A separate rule on the Upcoming Requirements page says that since September 9, 2026, iOS and iPadOS apps uploaded to App Store Connect must target iOS 13 or later. ## Check it before you upload These commands show which SDK your selected Xcode builds with. On our Mac, with Xcode 27.1 selected: ```bash xcodebuild -version # Xcode 27.1, Build version 27A9275 xcrun --sdk iphoneos --show-sdk-version # 27.1 ``` Note that plain `xcrun --show-sdk-version` reports the macOS SDK (27.0 here), not the iOS one. To check a build you already made, read the SDK Xcode recorded in the built Info.plist: ```bash plutil -extract DTSDKName raw "MyApp.app/Info.plist" # iphoneos27.1 plutil -extract DTXcode raw "MyApp.app/Info.plist" # 2710 ``` We ran these on a fresh Release build and on an older archive, which reported `iphoneos26.5` and `2650` (Xcode 26.5). Both meet the April 2026 rule. The [Xcode and SDK requirements tool](/tools/xcode-sdk-requirements) takes an Xcode version and tells you whether its SDKs meet the current upload rule for each platform, with the date and the Apple notice behind it. The [Info.plist checker](/tools/info-plist-checker) reads the SDK from a built Info.plist, and the [ITMS error lookup](/tools/itms-error-lookup) explains every ITMS code in a pasted email. ## FAQ ### Which Xcode do I need to upload to App Store Connect now? Since April 28, 2026, Xcode 26 or later with an SDK for iOS 26, iPadOS 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26 or watchOS 26, according to Apple's Upcoming Requirements page. ### Do I have to raise my minimum iOS version? Not for this error. Apple lists Xcode 26 as able to deploy to iOS 15 through 26. A separate rule since September 9, 2026 requires iOS and iPadOS apps to target iOS 13 or later. ### My Mac has the new Xcode but the upload still fails. Why? Check which Xcode actually built the archive: `xcode-select -p` on the build machine, the Xcode version set in CI, and `DTSDKName` in the built Info.plist. ### Does ITMS-90725 apply to Mac apps? The current notice names iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, visionOS and watchOS SDKs and does not name macOS. We did not find a matching macOS rule on the page, so check the page itself before relying on that. ### Will this error come back next year? Apple has already announced the next step: starting April 2027, iOS and iPadOS apps must be built with the iOS 27 & iPadOS 27 SDK or later, and tvOS, visionOS and watchOS apps with their 27 SDKs. Builds made with Xcode 26 will then be too old. ## Sources - [Upcoming Requirements](https://developer.apple.com/news/upcoming-requirements/), Apple Developer News - [App Store submissions now open for the latest OS releases](https://developer.apple.com/news/?id=k1mtkt1k), Apple Developer News, September 9, 2026 - [Xcode support: minimum requirements and supported SDKs](https://developer.apple.com/support/xcode/), Apple Developer - [ITMS-90725 thread](https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/726841), Apple Developer Forums
