SchriftOhr turns the books you already have into something you can listen to, and keeps your place, your notes and your library the same on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Open an EPUB, a PDF, a Markdown or text file, a comic or an audiobook. SchriftOhr reads EPUBs, PDFs and Markdown aloud with the sentence highlighted and the words underlined as they are spoken. Your place is saved as you go, and the book opens where you left it, on the phone, the iPad or the Mac. TWO KINDS OF VOICES - Apple’s voices, including the premium ones you install in Settings. - A neural voice that runs entirely on your device. Download it once over Wi-Fi and it reads offline, with no account and no subscription. Hear a word pronounced wrongly, teach it the right way once, and the teaching follows you to all your devices; names and technical abbreviations especially. Deeper lowers the range of any voice for that book. - RFRMD Neural runs the same voices on the Neural Engine of a recent iPhone, iPad or Mac: quick, cool and light on the battery, and it tells a noun from a verb. - With a little effort you can give a book a cast: each character in a voice of their own, worked out from the text, or simply a man's and a woman's voice beside the narrator. Some quoted speech may take a few refinements. MADE TO LISTEN - Screen off listening: leave the page untouched and it dims and turns off; a tap brings it back. - A sleep timer that fades the voice down, a driving view with big controls, and a page turner that turns the pages silently at a speed you set. - Speed, text size, highlight color, and the OpenDyslexic font. - Prepared audio: chapters made ahead while charging, so long listens cost less battery. PAGES YOU CAN FOLLOW - Every book has printed pages: the pill shows the screen page in the middle and the printed page at its left end, so a study group's page 62 can be followed by ear. A book with none of its own is paged as a paperback or a hardback would be, with ≈ before the number. The printed page follows the voice as it reads, and one tap matches the text size to the paper. A LIBRARY OF YOUR OWN - Keep a copy of any book in your library, named for its author and title, and it follows you to every device through iCloud. Or add a folder of your own and read its books where they are, no question asked. - Notes of your own: Markdown and text files go by their file names, and a note you edit is read again where its words changed. - Locations: every place in a book has a number, the same on every device. Type it and you are there. - A shelf of free SchriftOhr Editions, proofed and set to be read aloud, with ready-made audio in two voices, and a catalog of public-domain books to search. - Two ways to see a book: the reader's own pages, or the Publisher view, the book as its maker laid it out. YOUR THOUGHTS, KEPT - Keep passages with five pens and a note on each; the Notebook gathers them in reading order. - Compile your thoughts into a book report: three questions to answer as you read, and the passages you marked in violet, gathered as one Markdown page for any editor. LISTENING IMPROVEMENTS - Footnotes are stepped over when the voice reads, or read aloud if you prefer; a notes chapter at the back can be skipped too. PRIVATE BY DESIGN - Your books, your place, your notes and any audio you make stay on your devices and in your own iCloud. We collect nothing. The privacy policy names every service the app talks to. - One purchase for iPhone, iPad and Mac. No account, no subscription. IMPORTANT: You are responsible for having the right to read or copy the books you open.
